Welcome to Juju’s CandyLand

Birthdays are very important moments as it symbolizes a step into a new life. So, what better way to celebrate Juju’s birthday than with a sleepover! It has always been important to me to celebrate Juju and all her Black Girl Joy, so we took her favorite treats and colors and decided upon a CandyLand theme! We were able to all while keeping the cost under $700!

Here are some tips and tricks on how to have a sleepover on a budget:

Tip #1: Ensure your invites are cute and detailed so that other parents can know when their children will leave and the activities they will undertake, especially if you’re planning to combine a slumber party and brunch as I did.

  • Juju’s invites were FREE99, because I used Canva to make everything. Canva not only provides free editable templates that I use for all of my projects but a pro service that allows you take your designs to the next level when it comes to branding.

Tip #2: Limit the number of guests to a manageable size. This will make it easier to keep an eye on everyone and create a more personalized touch.

  • Even though Juju wanted to invite everyone she knew, we could not due to the pandemic and we wanted to keep everyone safe, but still fun.

Tip #3: Transform the party room or area into a space that immerses your guests and transports them into a new reality. Also, make it easy for your guests to know where they are sitting/sleeping and what belongs to them. Again, this can be done at a low cost and with little experience needed.

Tip #4: Elevate the experience with small additions that will make your guests remember your event.

  • I added a snack table full of sweets, candy, and goodies, of which I got from the Party City and Ross, and spent about $80 on. I also included a plastic serving tray beside each tent, which doubled up as food trays. I spent $33 in total on the trays, and purchased them from Michaels.

  • There were also a little plastic box on each tray with eye masks, tooth brush, toothpaste, wash cloth, tye dye pajam shorts, and other slumber party overnight essentials for a five-star experience, all from Target for a total of about $50.

  • Cotton Catalyst , my go to for custom orders, made custom pillows with their names and custom “Candy Girl Squad” shirts.

  • Lastly, we to the LA Santee Alley, purchased green and purple velvet fabric for $.99 a yard to make our own pillows. We also purchased pastel pink fabric to cover the floor and colorful polka dot fabric to add colorful touches to blankets.

Tip #5: Make sure you have lots of food and entertainment!

  • Saturday Night

    • The girls ate pizza, made their own pillows from oriental trading, had a spa night, played games including CandyLand, and of course made thousands of Tik Tok videos.

  • Sunday Morning and Afternoon

    • The girls got dressed wit jeans and sweatshirts provided as a gift and we enjoyed the day at Sugar Factory where they were wined and dined with excellent service and food. See for yourself below.

Planing events are hard, and planning events for children can be even harder. That’s why it was so important for me to share with you all my experience, in the hopes that someone reading this feels a little less anxiety, and has a bit more guidance. Feel free to share and use these tips as you see fit, and let me know how your party goes!
